How to Get More Google Traffic to Your Small Business Website

by | Aug 23, 2022

Get ready to take a shot, preferably a ginger one, every time I use the word “Google” in this post because we are about to talk about SEO, and in the world of SEO, Google is the Queen. If you ever tried to research how to rank on Google, you were probably hit in the face with technical terms like SEO, algorithm, niche, and HTML tags. When I started building websites, I found an overwhelming abundance of mansplaining technical jargon that left a sour taste in my mouth.

It took me weeks of tutorials and information translation to figure out the basic steps of building a good SEO strategy. I vowed to take what I learned and break it down into easily digestible, actionable steps so I could help small business owners like myself.

I’m here to teach you how to simply rank your website on Google without having to do hours and hours of keyword research. So now that you have a month’s supply of spicy ginger coursing through your veins let’s get started.

Use Googles Free marketing Tool

The first thing you need to do after launching your business is to take advantage of Google’s free marketing tool, the Google Business Profile. The last time you searched Google for “pizza near me,” you saw listings from Google Business Profiles before the search results. This is precisely why this is the first thing you need to set up: it gives you access to prime real estate on the search results page.

Even if you don’t have a physical location, you can have a Business Profile. While setting up your profile, make sure you complete the information. Google will give a little boost to profiles that are complete. Here is a checklist from 5 Simple Steps to Improve SEO;

Checklist

Adding pictures to your profile is uber important. Google keeps its formula for ranking mostly a secret. However, you can use their documentation to get hints and read about the basics. According to their documentation, adding pictures to your profile gets 35% more clicks to your website.

Keep all your information accurate

Okay, cool, now you know the importance of creating a Google Business Profile. The next thing you should do is keep your information accurate and up to date. I know this sounds like a no-brainer, but it’s the number one fix I suggest when I do an SEO Audit.

Google checks the accuracy of your business information anywhere on the internet. If it notices different information in one instance, you will get penalized in your ranking in local results.

The moral of the story is to ensure all your information on your business profile, website, social media, yelp, Bing, and trip advisor matches.

Be number one in local business rankings

Now that all your information is accurate across the web let’s focus on being number one in local listings. According to Google’s documentation, “Google review count and review score factor into local search ranking. More reviews and positive ratings can improve your business’s local ranking.”

So how do you get reviews?

  1. Offer a coupon for anyone who leaves a review.
  2. Offer a service or product in return for a review.
  3. Use the review link; it’s in your Google Business Profile dashboard, on your website, and in your newsletter.

To ensure you get high-quality reviews, ask customers to mention the specific product or service they purchased. In addition, you will get a boost if Google sees keywords used in your reviews.

After you get reviews, make sure you respond ASAP, this will tell Google that you are a responsible business that cares about your customers.

You got this!

Now it’s your turn. Set aside 20 minutes to set up your Google Business Profile. Trust me when I say it’s easy. Once it’s up and running, it requires low maintenance, but the return is exponential. Want more easy steps for getting a better Google rank? Download my guide!
